Medical Loans Australia — Finance Dental, Cosmetic & Elective Procedures
Guide to medical loans in Australia: how they work, what procedures are covered (dental, cosmetic, IVF), current rates, and alternatives like payment plans.
What Medical Loans Cover
Medical loans are personal loans used to finance healthcare procedures not covered (or only partially covered) by Medicare or private health insurance:
- Dental: Implants, orthodontics, crowns and other treatment not fully covered
- Cosmetic surgery: Procedures not covered by Medicare or insurance
- IVF/Fertility: Treatment and related out-of-pocket costs
- Bariatric surgery: Eligible out-of-pocket hospital and treatment costs
- Laser eye surgery: Procedures such as LASIK or SMILE
- Orthopaedic: Joint replacement with shorter wait times than public system
Loan Options
Specialist Medical Finance
Some lenders offer medical-specific loans with features like:
- Clinic-linked applications: The provider may refer you to a lender
- Direct settlement: Some products pay the clinic rather than the borrower
- Promotional terms: Check whether “interest-free” still carries establishment, account or late fees
Standard Personal Loan
A regular unsecured personal loan used for medical purposes.
- Terms: 1–5 years
- No medical-specific features; compare the personalised comparison rate and total repayments
Clinic Payment Plans
Many clinics offer in-house payment plans:
- Often interest-free if paid within the promotional period
- May charge account, establishment or late fees, or interest after a promotional period
- Less paperwork but potentially more expensive if you miss the deadline
Compare the Financing Cost
There is no official market-wide “medical loan” rate range. Compare the lender’s personalised interest rate, comparison rate, fees and total repayments. “Interest-free” does not necessarily mean cost-free. Source: Moneysmart interest-free deals, checked July 2026.
Eligible low-income applicants may be able to use a No Interest Loan for up to $2,000 of essential medical or dental costs, with no interest or fees. This is not a cash loan and eligibility applies. Source: Moneysmart No Interest Loans, checked July 2026.
Alternatives to Consider
- Superannuation early release: This is limited to strict compassionate-ground criteria and evidence. Solely cosmetic treatment would not normally qualify. Check the ATO rules before relying on this option.
- Private health insurance: Check if your policy covers the procedure (waiting periods apply)
- Payment plan with the clinic: Often interest-free if paid within the window
- Savings: For elective procedures, saving up is always the cheapest option
Warning
Medical loan interest rates can be significantly higher than standard personal loans. The convenience of same-day approval at the clinic often comes at a premium. Always compare the total cost across options.
